Students and staff from East New Britain studying and working at Divine Word University (DWU) in Madang gathered on Friday morning, 25th of July to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in the recent sea tragedy in East New Britain.

The remembrance began with a 5:00 am walk from the DWU main campus to Tusbab Beach, where participants held prayers, laid flowers, and observed a moment of reflection in memory of the victims.

The tribute was organised by the Divine Word University East New Britain Students Association (ENBSA) and was attended by students and staff from East New Britain, alongside representatives from Manus, New Ireland, West New Britain, the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, and other students from the Momase, Southern, and Highlands regions. Members of the East New Britain community living in Madang, students from Madang Technical College, and the DWU Catholic Students Association also joined in support.

DWU Chaplain Fr. Vincent Agbeyome-Akpah led the prayer service and delivered a sermon, encouraging those present to remember the victims and pray for the grieving families.

Speaking during the tribute, ENBSA President Jason Tabun said the gathering was organised to express love, respect, and remembrance for those who tragically lost their lives at sea.

“The heartbreaking news touched us all, and we felt it was important to unite in prayer and reflection while standing in solidarity with the grieving families,” Tabun said.

He thanked the university community, provincial student associations, the East New Britain Tolai community in Madang, and friends who participated, saying their presence demonstrated compassion, unity, and the strength of standing together during difficult times.

“As we walked together to Tusbab Beach, we were reminded that we are not alone in times of sorrow. The support shown by the university community and the people of Madang reflected the true spirit of togetherness and shared humanity,” he said.

Tabun also extended the association’s deepest condolences to the families who lost loved ones in the tragedy.

“This floral tribute is a small gesture to let you know that you are not alone. Our thoughts and prayers remain with you, and we pray that God grants you strength, comfort, and peace during this difficult time,” he said.

He added that the tragedy serves as a reminder of the preciousness of life and encouraged people to cherish their families, show kindness to one another, and remain grateful for each day.

The tribute concluded with prayers for the victims, with participants expressing hope that the souls of those who perished may rest in eternal peace and that God’s comfort will continue to be with every family affected.
